- borderline personality and employment (25)
- I assume the people requesting this query are seeking to know if someone
who has BPD can be successfully employed. If not, see BPD Coworkers and supervisors.
April (my BPD common-law spouse) has been successfully employed in a above
average stress job as long as I've known her. She has threatened to quit over
situations most people would consider annoyances.
I myself have hired many people. I personally would never put someone who has BPD in a positiation where they would deal with the public frequently. I would personally fear he or she would do or say something to a customer which would look very bad on the business. However, I think based on my experience with April they do very well in any other area of work. April has called in sick, and had it not been for my calling her in, simply would 'no-show' many times.
Some of those times, I too had to call in sick because she was too drunk or had taken an excessive amount of what ever medication was available. During some of her more traumatic episodes, she would call in about every other month two or three days, even though she was not physically ill. She was fired from one job because of this. She decided on a whim to quit another because of $0.50/hr less than she understood the position paid. Later she said she didn't like the hours. I'm unsure as to why she quit, but she did without notice.
Now that she's been in treatment for a while, she has not put me in a position where I had to call her in sick when she was not sick. While she's regularly annoyed or stressed in her work, she's still working.
Ultimately, you, the hiring authority, must make the call, each individual is different. As with almost any employee, feeling appreciated is a huge benefit to those with BPD.
